How long will it take?
This is a difficult question to answer as everyone is unique. Some people
find a year or two is beneficial and others prefer to keep it very brief
or, alternatively, to take as much time as they need. During the process
of the therapeutic relationship, it will often become apparent what supports
you in the most appropriate way.
What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Counselling is better suited if we are addressing specific issues and
we would work to an agreed length of time. Through this process you may
often gain new insights, increase self-esteem and self-awareness and find
new ways forward.
Psychotherapy is more suitable if you wish to gain a deeper understanding
of your symptoms and behaviour and for those people whose symptoms are
persistent, repetitive or less specific. This is usually an open-ended
process or longer in duration.
Isn’t it a sign of weakness to see a counsellor?
Paradoxically it is a sign of strength to have the courage to change something
about your life when you feel that aspects are not working as you would
wish or, for instance, you feel stuck in a destructive pattern of behaviour.
